Chagall: Fantasies for the Stage, LACMA
On my trip to Los Angeles (visiting Julia!), I saw this amazing show at the LACMA of Chagall's ballet costumes. While Chagall is better known for his paintings, his costumes combined his lively mark making with materiality. I loved the playful craftiness of these pieces, and the nearly crude handiwork made them so endearing and sweet, while each detail was clearly very deliberate and considered.
I was too excited to take too many photos, but the exhibit was broken down into the four major plays Chagall made costumes for -- music from each production played in the background, and some of the mannequins spun in place. I can only image how beautiful these costumes were when activated through dance and live instruments.

This one was my favorite -- it's so abstracted and textural. |
