Emilie Jehng - November 2017, Portland

Hey ladies~
First things first...I must apologize for missing October's posting. Mid month I went home for family emergency. It was a difficult month not only because of what happened, but also because of how it affected how I viewed my personal work. I started feeling like most things, including my personal work, were extremely trivial. So I let myself stop thinking for a bit. I focused on a few things that I knew could keep me busy, I took a deep dive into the work I was doing at adidas, and focused on maintaining relationships.
Bit by bit, I let it slowly come back to me. I started looking through my previous work, thinking of where I could develop them further, looking at old mood boards, seeing what had inspired me in the past, and painting color swatches, slowly growing excitement towards future work.

The work I wanted to share this month isn't what I mentioned above (its still in the fetus stage), but what I had started when I first moved to Portland. After I finished at RISD in February/March(?) I had some time at home before starting at adidas on the Creative Direction - Materials team. It was then that I took my first wheel throwing class. I found it both challenging and satisfying in a very visceral way. The things I made in San Jose were mostly small cups, bowls, etc...just the fact that I could make *something ceramic* was enough for me.

This time around I wanted to focus on throwing slightly larger forms, and experiment with fun shapes. Here are three pieces that I was happy with:

A few things I learned:
- Porcelain is very fun to throw! The particulates are extremely fine, which means that it is very easy on the hands, but also means that its like throwing butter...
-Because of the water content in the clay, porcelain shrinks more than normal clays. I laughed when I saw how much smaller these guys became
-Cone 06 glaze is very different than Cone 6 glaze

Anyways, thanks for reading all of the above. My personal work development is very very tied to how I feel and what is going on in my life, and as such, I wanted to give an update with where I'm at. I'm slowly getting back into work that I feel is worthwhile and that I'm emotionally invested in; I hope to share that with you guys after it reaches a certain stage.

All of that being said, I'm excited that this space exists for us, and I'm looking forward to being a part of the GBC as it grows.

-Emilie
