Katie Han - November 2017, New York

I spent this month regrouping and gathering materials for further swatch development. I felt unfocused in terms of where to begin seeking a point of reference for developing my own visual language, and it seemed that all the sources of inspiration I had been looking at were stale and no longer relevant. There were a couple of weeks where I felt really stuck, so I took that time to make a backstrap loom and do some drawings.

Here are some of the swatches and drawings I've been working on:

I was frustrated at my slow progress this month, but I've been thinking a lot about patience and letting myself dwell in this stage of exploration rather than trying to rush towards reaching a conclusion. I think it will help to look for inspiration from more diverse sources (books, movies, exhibits), and incorporate writing as a way to reflect/react to these experiences.

Luckily, I found an amazing source of inspiration on my trip to the LACMA, at the Chagall: Fantasies for the Stage exhibit, and am really looking forward to seeing the Roots of "The Dinner Party": History in the Making at the Brooklyn Museum!
