Katie Han - December 2017, New York

Hi GBC --
I had a lot of fun knitting and drawing this month! Realizing that I am interested in costume design has helped to both relax and focus my work. Having some sort of abstract end application has allowed me to aim in a certain direction and really go all out for it, and I'm looking forward to investigating material and mark making not only through knitting, but collage, painting, and embellishment.

Although progress has felt a little slow this month, I did notice that I am thinking about swatches and ideas more and more even when I'm not at my knitting machine. It's taken me a while to reach a point at work to able to really separate myself from a sometimes chaotic day at the office and still have mental space/energy saved up for my own practice.

This month, I tried some elastic punch card techniques, a lot of which I didn't like the results of but were very informative nonetheless. I feel really excited about the new colors of yarn that Haesoo helped me buy from Jagger last month, and it's been very helpful in expanding my color palette. Here are some of the swatches that I am interested in continuing to work with:

I also organized my swatches into little groups, trying to have a good balance between graphics and textures.

  1. Katie - I am catching up on GBC right now... these are amazing! I really love the swatch in the first image with the coral and light blue. Lovely color combo and beautiful loft/volume!
